So I suppose this is where we have a chance to get a little self-indulgent and sentimental. The story is not particularly complicated, to be honest... We are two close friends with a passion for teaching, a passion for seeking out new challenges and an inclination to deliver things better than they are already being delivered.
We started this course as a project to do things differently in how PACES courses were run. We sought out the registrars and consultants with the greatest teaching skills and enthusiasm we could find (and have taught on multiple PACES courses) and who remained romantic about the idea of clinical skills in general medicine. PACES teaching on the wards is tough - time restrictions aside, patients that come to exams are typically more "outpatient" and teaching on wards is therefore fundamentally different.
We wanted a course that was easy to book on busy rotas, but condensed all the teaching you could want into a single day.
We wanted to deliver a day where candidates were stress-tested to develop the skills to think on their feet, examine under timed conditions and came out feeling confident that they were ready for the exam.
That meant focusing on strict numbers of candidates at a bedside, searching out for the best clinical teachers we could find and procuring fantastic PACES cases.
Our course has grown and we are still overwhelmed by the generous feedback from our fantastic trainees, some of whom have come back to help us teach on the course. The journey continues, and we are still excited about medicine, teaching and, yes, even PACES.
